DRUG-RESISTANT TUBERCULOSIS IN CHILDREN

Dalia Steponaviciene, Algirdas Andriuska

Kaunas 2nd Clinical Hospital, Baltijos Str. 120, Kaunas, Lithuania

Tuberculosis is still very important problem worldwide. Mycobacteria tuberculosis can be resistant for antituberculous medicines because of not adequate treatment with low doses of medicines or too short courses of treatment as well as interrupted treatment. In the article we discussed the diagnostics and treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis in children. According to the data of Kaunas 2nd Clinical Hospital drug-resistant tuberculosis is increasing among children of Kaunas district. We presented two clinical cases of children drug-resistant tuberculosis. Precise epidemiologic analysis confirmed, that the main source of drug-resistant tuberculosis in children was alcohol and drug abused adults with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. At present in our democratic society there is no law basis for compulsory treatment or isolation of alcohol or drug abused adults infected with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. It seems DOTS alone can not resolve the problem. We are concluded that in our epidemiological situation it is necessary to reevaluate possibility of compulsory treatment of alcohol or drug abused adults with tuberculosis.
