Viral infection and wheezing child: new insights in treatment and prevention. Laimute Vaideliene
Virus infection – most common risk factor for lower respiratory tract obstruction – wheezing and asthma exacerbation in infants and toddlers. The immune mechanisms of virus inflammation in healthy and atopic children still incompletely understood. The role of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in atopic sensitization is controversial. The effective treatment of wheezing is impossible, not knowing these mechanisms. The review below focuses on preschool children wheezing phenotypes, possible mechanisms of virus inflammation in respiratory tract, long term and short term treatment options. Results of study PREVIA, discussing new treatment options of virus induced wheezing or asthma exacerbation are given below.
