The prevalence of asthma symptoms and diagnosed asthma among Kaunas school-children in 1994-1995 and 2001-2002 years

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of asthma symptoms among 6-7 and 13-14 years old school children in Kaunas and to assess dynamics of the prevalence during the last 6 years. 8980 schooolchildren were questioned in 1994-1995 and 2001-2002 years, using standardised ISAAC questionnaires. Response rate was 90 perc. Asthma symptoms are more common among younger boys and older girls. Asthma was diagnosed more often in 2001-2002 than in 1994-1995 years survey and incrreased from 0,9 perc. to 2,6 perc. among 6-7 years old schoolchildren and from 2,1 perc. to 3,3 perc. among 13-14 years old schoolchildren respectively.
