Early incidence of cystic fibrosis related diabetes mellitus Ieva Laimute Indrejaityte, Vida Uleckiene, Ruta Kvedariene, Arunas Valiulis
Changes in glucose metabolism in patients with CF were described in 1938, but only in 1955 the association between CF and diabetes mellitus was first recognized. The incidence of CFRDM ranges from 2.5 to 7.6% in North American, 4.9% in Mideuropean, 14.7% in Danish CF population. Such wide range of incidence could be due to differences in diagnostic criteria, difference of age of examined CF population, scope of studies, et al. Many publications stress the fact that diabetes mellitus become more frequent with age and the mean age of onset of CFRDM is approximately 18-20 years. CFRDM has already been described in a patient of 2 years age. However, the incidence of CFRDM is not only strongly related to the patients age, some other factors are also postulated to influence of occurrence CFRDM such a genotype and gender.
Etiopathogenesis, clinical features of CFRDM and differences between CFRDM and DM I, II types are described in this article. It also described criteria of diagnostic, mass selection and approach to CFRDM treatment. The case of CFRDM in a patient of 3.5 years of age is described.
